The Baron Hotel was a meeting point for stranded Americans earlier this week where they were rescued by Chinook helicopter.
Americans had gathered at the Baron Hotel near the airport, and three Chinook helicopters brought them to safety Thursday, Kirby confirmed to CNN and The New York Times on Friday.
The explosion occurred at the airport itself, and in the area of the adjacent Baron Hotel, which was previously widely used by #British troops. Local resources report the possibility of a second explosion.#KabulAirpot#Afghanistan https://t.co/w4fqfMRnis pic.twitter.com/68YIhweTxs
