Judges 6:12-27 – (Paraphrase) God tells Gideon to tear down Baal’s altar and cut down the wooden image/pole. He was to use these things to make an altar and sacrifice to God. Gideon obeys, but does so at night in secret, because he feared the men of the city.

God understands our growing up into Him in all things. He is patient and kind. He understands our weakness, but is constantly calling us up higher. When we obey God in spite of our fears – He is well pleased with us. He takes pleasure in His children’s growth, and does not punish them as they move forward. He is a good father.

God asked Gideon to start with a small battle. He didn’t come and ask him to start with the big battle. God gave Gideon the opportunity to prove the Lord was with him in a small battle so he could build his confidence for the real battle.

God is kind with His children. He gives them opportunity to grow in confidence, faith and trust. He desires us to fully trust Him, but is at the same time patient to allow us to grow into that place. He is not pushing us to believe. He is inviting us to believe, and willing to stand by His word and prove that He is faithful and trustworthy.

For one growing up in church, they could get the idea that sanctification is a process. That one becomes holier the closer he adheres to God's law and commandments now that they have received the free gift of salvation. However, righteousness is completely free! It is available to us through the finished work of Christ. It is all His doing. All His work! None of our own, lest we should boast. This is good news!
