The key to overcoming fear is to understand that God loves us and that we can trust Him – no matter what!  He will be faithful to His word.

Notes –

  • We aren’t really afraid of things as much as we are afraid of the unknown
  • The key to overcoming fear is to understand that God loves us and that we can trust Him – no matter what – He will be faithful to His word
  • Anxiety and worry are fear
  • The fear is from the unknown
  • We don’t fear the dark – we fear the unknown in the dark – what may be there that we don’t know about
  • There are two different mindsets –
    • Growth – I’m going to adapt, I’m going to fix things, I’m not going to stay the same as I am right now, I’m going to move forward
    • Fixed – there’s nothing I can do, I take life as it comes, I just have to accept the reality that there is
  • Fixed Mindset
    • Waiting for Jesus to come and rescue us
    • Can’t wait for Jesus to return
    • Accept things the way they are
    • Some people have more favor than others
  • Growth Mindset
    • I can learn
    • I can change
    • I can get more favor as I grow to understand how favored I am
  • There’s two ways to think –
  • Let’s say you want to start a business –
    • I didn’t have enough money
    • I didn’t have enough time
    • Everything was falling apart
    • Everyone was against me
    • No one was for me
    • I didn’t know what to do
    • These are all outer excuses
  • It’s not what happens to you on the outside that determines the outcome, it’s what happens on the inside.
  • It’s how you’re processing what’s happening – not necessarily what’s happening
  • Outer excuses are simply obstacles that we need to learn how to overcome
  • We get scared because we don’t know what to do
  • We have to be trained in the right mindset –
    • According to scripture
    • According to the mind of Christ
  • It’s not what’s happening on the outside that’s keeping you from succeeding.  It’s who’s facing these obstacles?
    • The fixed mindset?  (Me)
    • The growth mindset?  (Christ in Me!)
  • The way to change your mindset
    • Romans 12:2
    • Start thinking out of who you are in Christ, and understanding that your in Christ.
    • When you’re in Christ – so is everything else.  So are all your problems.  So are all your circumstances.  So are all your obstacles.  Everything is in Christ when you realize that you are in Him.
    • Everything is in Christ –
      • Strength, wisdom, favor, victory,
      • But we have to think according to this way
  • We are afraid of the unknown, because we don’t believe what we can’t see
  • Your mind will make things become real –
    • And fear becomes real when you start processing it out of a wrong mindset
    • All you can do is think about what’s wrong.  Think about what’s not working out.
    • Your mind stays there
  • The things you fix your mind on will become your reality
  • Train your mind not to focus on what’s wrong
    • When you start focusing on what’s wrong, pretty soon, all you will see is what’s wrong.  You won’t see what’s right or what’s possible.  You’ll lose sight of your victory in Christ Jesus.
    • The Bible tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus – the author and finisher of our faith.  (Hebrews 2:9 & 12:2)
    • Set your mind on things above (Colossians 3:2)
  • 90% of the things we worry about – never happen
  • When you start thinking about obstacles and issues – you start creating them
  • We need to start thinking about the things that are going to happen in Christ – the things that God said,  the promises He’s given us, the things that He wants us to have (fruit of the Spirit)
    • Those things will eliminate fear
    • Whatsoever things are holy, pure – think on these things
  • Anxiety issues – are from the mind
    • You need to learn to take control of your mind
    • You have to work on it
    • Success doesn’t happen on accident
    • 2 Peter 1:3
    • He’s given us tools and weapons to overcome this way of thinking
    • We need to train our mind
  • Look at things through the mind of Christ and the possibilities of His majesty
  • It’s one thing to have fear and another thing to live in it.
    • When you live in fear, the way you talk sounds crazy to the kingdom of God.
  • How do you live the John 10:10 abundant life?
    • Self-control!
    • I know I’m afraid, but that’s not me.
    • I feel afraid, but God I thank you that you’ve not given me a spirit of fear!  But of peace love and a sound mind.
  • Many times we allow our emotions to speak for us because we lack self-control.
  • We struggle with fear because we don’t know what’s going to happen.
    • But it’s not about knowing what’s going to happen, it’s about Who you know.  When we know Him, we can be confident in the outcome, because we know that He is good.  We know that He is with us.
  • Fear is an emotion
    • Emotions do not dictate who you are
    • We are not defined by our emotions
    • We are not even defined by our past actions
    • We are defined by the finished work of Jesus on the cross!
    • The only time that our emotions and feelings get to dictate who we are is when we start bowing to them.
  • When you see someone you want to pray for, but are afraid, it’s because of fear.  It’s your fear in the flesh that’s getting in the way.
    • It’s not GOD!
    • It’s not the wisdom of the Holy Spirit?
    • Why?  How do we know?
      • Because He doesn’t give us a spirit of fear!
      • He doesn’t use fear to control or manipulate us.
      • He loves us, and there is no fear in love!
    • The Spirit inside of you is not afraid of anything!
      • Its your flesh.  It’s the old man talking.  (The one who’s supposed to be dead!  Crucified with Christ.)
  • When you change your mindset, you can overcome the fear of failure, because you understand that everything that’s happening to you is to help you grow.
    • Everything that comes into your life – whether a victory or a failure is able to be used by God to help you to grow, to empower you
    • Yes – even our failures
    • Why?  Because all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purposes.
    • All things – good, bad, failures, short-comings – yes even sin!
    • Because ALL things is ALL things
    • God can win with any hand He is dealt.
    • He is that confident in His majesty that no matter what we or the enemy throws at Him, that He can take it and still win.
    • He can use it to work ALL things together for good
    • So we can have confidence in Him
    • We can have confidence in His confidence
    • He’s never lost a hand, and He never will
      • It doesn’t matter what hand He’s dealt, He still believes He can and will win!
    • So why would we be afraid, that somehow our hand is a hand that He can’t work with?
    • Why would we think that our situation or circumstance is different?
    • That for the first time, God is going to break His word, because we’ve done something that even He can’t redeem?
    • He’s good!  He will be true to His word.  He elevated His word above even His own name, because his name is only as good as His word.
  • Everyone has favor – the key is to grow in it  (Jesus had favor, but he continued to grow in it)

For one growing up in church, they could get the idea that sanctification is a process. That one becomes holier the closer he adheres to God's law and commandments now that they have received the free gift of salvation. However, righteousness is completely free! It is available to us through the finished work of Christ. It is all His doing. All His work! None of our own, lest we should boast. This is good news!
